Don’t Forget These Commonly Forgotten House Maintenance Tips

Taking care of a home requires many different maintenance tips. Some you perform monthly while others annually. Too often, we forget to perform some of these routine tasks. By properly maintaining your home and its various features, you can avoid some costly repair and premature replacement costs. When planning your chore list, be sure to keep these helpful home maintenance tips in mind.

Test the Detectors

Maintenance and repair experts recommend that we check our fire and carbon monoxide detectors on a quarterly basis. Most of these devices are easy to check with the mere push of a button. Keep the instructions for these detectors in a convenient location so you can refer to them about how to check each one. If you encounter a problem, you may need to replace batteries or purchase a new device. As essential safety features for any residence, these detectors should never be neglected.

Clean the Gutters

Most people can get away with cleaning their gutters once a year; however, if you live in an area with lots of tall trees, your gutters could be taking in more debris than other homes. Falling twigs and leaves can easily clog gutters if they’re not removed. It’s a good idea to clean your gutters before the rainy season to ensure that they’re free from blockages. Even if you don’t clean your gutters more than once annually, you might want to perform a simple inspection every six months to ensure that there is no debris build-up in your gutter system.

Inspect Your Roof

Your roof is an essential feature of your home. After periods of strong winds or major storms, it’s important to inspect your roof for signs of damage. Many homeowners opt to have a contractor perform a professional roof inspection once a year to ensure it’s in optimum condition. If you encounter missing shingles or areas where animals have caused damage, you can make the necessary repairs right away.

Clean Your Dryer Vent

Homeowners should clean their dryer vent at least once a year. If you have a household with four or more, you may need to perform this chore two or three times a year. If your dryer vent becomes clogged with lint, you have a fire hazard on your hands. A sign that your vent might be filling up with lint is when your clothes don’t dry during a single cycle like they normally would. If this happens, inspect your vent while the dryer is running. If you’re not getting adequate exhaust through the vent, be sure to clean it immediately.

Clean Shower Heads and Faucet Aerators

Over time, sediment builds up in shower heads and aerators. It’s important to clean these features once a year or you could suffer from reduced water pressure. Too much build-up in these features can also lead to their reduced longevity. While it’s a tedious chore to disassemble these fixtures, it can easily be done in a single morning or afternoon once a year.

These are just a few important home maintenance tips you should perform. Make yourself a handy checklist of important maintenance tasks and refer to it monthly so you can keep your house in tip-top condition–and save money on expensive repairs.
